Pedagogical Innovation Project 2019

About the VIENA project

There is a clear tendency of the automobile industry investing in self-driving and environmentally friendly vehicles, namely, electric vehicles.
The VIENA project (Intelligent Electric Vehicle with Autonomous Navigation) intends to create a flexible and accessible platform for the academic community, that enables investigation, research, and testing on the topic of autonomous navigation in electric vehicles.

Beyond the inherent academic interest, the project also intends to create an open testing platform, to encourage the creation of relationships between research centers/universities and the automobile industry.

The project is also intended as a demonstration of the work that can be done in a university context, as a way to attract new students to Instituto Superior Técnico.

Objectives

  • Developing support technology, dedicated to providing a more autonomous, safe and electric urban mobility. The developing technologies should support professional drivers in the prevention of motor accidents.
  • Developing tools to detect and evaluate undesirable driving conditions, e.g. somnolence, or uncommon practices, and to warn of, control, or correct that behavior.
  • Reusing components and materials set aside by other IST projects, either because they were substituted by improved versions, or because they no longer fulfill those projects' needs, allowing for a more environmentally conscious approach, as well as a reduction of development costs.
  • Supporting the activities of Curricular Units related to the theme of Autonomous Vehicles.
